Wine bars transport me back to France. They encompass everything I used to love about my days living and working in Bordeaux, the days where I “worked” for two hours and then spent the rest of the day with friends and wine at a café. Richmond has a fantastic new little wine bar that I happened upon yesterday with a friend and it revived my appreciation for Europe’s joie de vivre and deliberately gentle pace of life.
Living yesterday with my “french glasses” on (that is, instead of the normal rose-colored ones) was refreshing, revitalizing and fulfilling. It doesn’t matter whether or not I drank wine, or specifically that I had the pleasure of being in a wine bar, what matters is that I took an afternoon to slow down my life. I strolled the trottoirs (sidewalks) the same way I would have in France, I window-shopped, and I went to a grocery store just to look at the vibrant colors of the fresh produce. Beauty surrounds us constantly, we just have to slow down and live a little à la française to properly appreciate each small detail.
