I yearn to put to words the emotions that most move my heart. It’s the only way I know how to slow down in life, to say no to the rush of busyness and to practice being in the present. People have told me that there’s nothing quite as filling to your soul like the gaze of your child and so I sit and stare at the connection captured in this photo of my beautiful baby girl, and I search to translate.
That look speaks to the tiny particles within me – to my biological being – that knit her together inside of me so many months, and now years ago. That look is more just than the look of a child in love with their parent, their maker, their protector … it is a fixation of full acceptance without judgment. I want to call it pure love, or possibly at least as pure of love as we can experience on earth. To the perfectionistic tendencies buried deep in the hearts of most women, this look uproots us, challenging the very definition of our quest for success and significance. Those eyes, even for just a moment, sweep up your entire soul in a divine embrace of worthiness. It is in that look that you realize you were made for this. You were chosen for this child. There may be a lot that you question in life, but the pairing of your eyes with those eyes is one of the few things you know for certain. You’re not sure how and you indubitably don’t feel qualified, but those little eyes fill in the crevices of all your self-doubt with an intangible assurance that you are going to love that little being with all of your being. You have confidence from that look that together, the love the two of you share, the love your little family shares, will contribute in a significant way to the love bank of the world.
Yes, the eyes of your child can fill your soul, and fill it into overflow. The purity of their potential and heart shine out through their intently set pupils and before their mouth even knows how to form a smile, their eyes do it for them. I think this is what people are talking about. I think that look, those eyes, that gaze, they all translate the same silent message: we are loved and we have been chosen to love and that with those two truths, we can have certainty that we have purpose. I am thankful for the glistening gaze of this little one who follows me everywhere I go, has created a permanent sitting spot on my hip and has her daddy wrapped around her little finger with her little voice that cries out Papa! Papa! when she sees him … and though we inevitably will have many bumps in the road of parenting ahead of us, her eyes and that look will always speak to me the same thing: I have been chosen for this little one and her for me and that means that all is right in the world and all will be well.
Pausing to see the beauty in life,
