Being a supervisor over a training staff responsible for positively impacting the lives of hundreds of clients on a daily basis, I am blessed. My work conversations rotate around how best to motivate others, on the specificity of program design, and on how best to keep clients accountable to their nutrition.
Personal training is a business based in passion. My staff pour their hearts and emotion into each and every client, creating an atmosphere of trust and support with the goal to allow that client to feel like our most important client of the day. The consistent thing between what trainers need and what clients need however is a simple reminder to always take care of oneself first. My roommate and trainer on staff, Melody Garthwaite said it best last night when she said: “Take care of you first. When you are good, you can then be good to others.”
If you are someone who puts your own needs and health last, consider flip-flopping it. You can love others better once you love yourself first. There is simply no excuse to not take care of yourself. Stop using others as an excuse or a crutch, because if you really love them and want to be around for them, then you need to prioritize your own health so that you can be fully alive when you are around.
Take on the hardest fitness challenge there is out there: actually take care of yourself.
