Recently I learned a valuable lesson about social resistance. You know, the skill you need to strengthen within yourself when friends overlook details in regards to you, or when the people you trust seem to have temporarily lost their reliability. Social resistance is like a workout; learning how to overcome unexpected cold shoulder treatment from friends feels like being in elementary school again. It happens to us all. We are hurt, oftentimes unintentionally, by people we esteem and consider close to us. We get pushed out of cliques, and get to remember what it feels like to be an outsider.
The next time that a friend unknowingly slights you, forgets about you or disappoints you, look at it as a social resistance workout. It is your opportunity to strengthen your social resistance muscle, to learn not to take everything personally and to be forgiving towards those who have unknowingly hurt you.
