Great call last night. Thank you for everyone who joined in on the call, and for those of you who weren’t able to make it, we missed you! Enjoy the call recording below and please email me by Wednesday, July 17th with an answer to the following question:
Below are the notes from our call and some food for thought for you!
Punch Fear in the Face:
1. Buy a Journal
2. Answer the question: “What do my voices of fear and doubt tell me?”
3. Mock each fear you write down.
4. Write truth.
5. Look for patterns in your voices.
6. Find a “mirror friend”, a truth reflector
7. Know that you are not alone in fear.
Escape Average:
1. Do an “average audit”: survey 7 areas of your life and see where you feel “average.” The areas are: physical, spiritual, financial, family, social, intellectual, and career.
2. Be brutally realistic about your present circumstances.
3. Be wildly unrealistic about your future circumstances.
4. Recognize that there will always be tension between steps #2 and #3.
5. Figure out what makes your heart sing.
6. Start.
7. Write “some beats none” on a Post-it and place everywhere.
8. Stand on the shoulders of giants.
Top Quotes from Jon Acuff’s book: Start: Punch Fear in the Face, Escape Average, Do Work That Matters The best map in the world doesn’t matter if you don’t know where you are. [Ask the simple question, “Where am I?”]
It’s not that we all chose average. No one aims for that in the beginning. Nobody says, “I’m going to be average for sixty-five years and then die!” But not long ago, the path to awesome was so long and arduous that most of us chose not to start. That, or we tried, and failed, to find a shortcut.
Awesome is a lot simpler than you think, because you used to know awesome quite well. Everyone did at one point. Especially when we were kids. …And in McRae’s little 6 –year-old mind, his imagination is on par with hers. He’s her peer.
The road to awesome is still accessible.
Age is no longer the primary factor that determines where you are on the map. Life is now less about how old you are and more about when you decide to live.
Regardless of your age or station in life, it all comes down to one simple truth: you just have to start.
Do you see the absurdity of that? “Don’t do it! Don’t do it! Don’t do it! fear screams. Then, when you ignore those cries, fear changes its tactic and screams, “Do it all at once! Do it all at once!” Both of those statements are lies.
Average is so popular because average is familiar. We all know how to do average. Ninety-nine percent of the people on the planet do average. The road is well worn, the decision are obvious, and the next steps are crystal clear. Average is predictable. Awesome is adventurous.
Doubt and fear are like muscles. Every time you believe a lie about yourself, it gets easier to believe it the next time.
Voice are invisible bullies, and they hate when you make them visible. They can’t stand to be documented, because the minute they are, you can see how stupid they are. Lies hate the light of day.
The number-one regret? “I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.”
You’re confusing awesome with a job title. Awesome is the core of who you are. It’s your heart, your soul, the fabric of what makes you. A job title is just a consequence of you living out of your awesome. I’m not trying to tell people to go out and find new job titles; I’m telling them to escape average.
What if the real definition of awesome is as simple as “singing more today than I did yesterday”?
Joy is an incredible alarm clock.
You know what’s better than words? Action.
Sometimes we’re afraid of success because if one area of our lives gets awesome, it will force us to deal with the area we’re really afraid of. We will look for any distraction from the issue we really don’t want to deal with. If we can wreck our success, we’ll still have something to focus on that can save us from seeing what’s really hurting us. It can save us from starting again on something else.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
(1). What did you do well this past 30 days? How did you move your needle?
(2). What is currently holding you back or challenging you as you continue to accelerate over the next 30 days?
