There is a word in this world so strong that it can break ice, translate foreign languages, connect enemies, create friends, change days, and shatter loneliness. One word, a word with so much power that it is often over-looked and undervalued, is a game-changer in life.
Hello changes everything and everyone. There is no more refreshing way to be reminded of this than while traveling. This weekend I saw callous faces melting, grouchy airport workers smiling, and foreigners who don’t share a tongue sharing a moment, all from a hello. Conversely, to watch an interaction between strangers, or even friends, that happens without a proper authentic greeting is not only harsh, but it is practically tragic to watch.
In a seminar this weekend, Alywn Cosgrove, a great leader in the fitness world, gave a wonderful piece of advice: be the most passionate and most positive person you know. This type of positive energy doesn’t always come naturally, it comes by choice. Cosgrove told his audience that we must choose to be the most positive people we know. We choose it. In the same sense, choose to be the most welcoming person you know. Be the first person to use the power of hello. Say it with sincerity, say it with enthusiasm, say it with kindness, whatever you do, just say it. See how it melts the hearts and uplifts the spirits of those around you, and never get complacent in being the most welcoming face in your world.
Embrace Cosgrove’s challenge along with mine this Monday morning and be a game-changer to the moods and energy levels of yourself and of those around you. I promise that you won’t be disappointed in the results of your impact.
