Never judge a book by its cover; sometimes reality can far surpass our expectations.
I had a driveway picnic last night just as night was falling. And, while I do enjoy eating outside and especially love picnics, the best part about my night came from a small, unexpected source. After having had the weekend of my dreams in New York City, there really wasn’t any way to top it, however, sitting out on the pavement I was proven wrong by a firefly. As night continued to fall, more and more fireflies came out and my amazement climaxed by the simplistic, unexpected beauty that these little flying beetles emanate as they light the night sky.
The firefly is an amazing insect. A beetle with wings, it looks unsuspecting, bland, and well, like a bug. There are over 2,000 species of fireflies, or lightening bugs, and each with a distinct tint to their light and precise lighting patterns according to their needs to communicate with each other and the world. Even more mind-blowing is that this tiny bug produces actual light from its abdomen, a light unique to fireflies only that is non-heat producing as not to light themselves on fire. It is simply incredible to think about.
Don’t be fooled, I’m not amazed at the firefly simply for it’s intricate make-up, because ,well, truth be told, I’m less left-side minded and more right-side dominant. To me, the most amazing thing about a firefly is that it is more than meets the eye.
We are all more than meets the eye, and we all have a special spark that is intended to be lit. If you’re communicating what you need to in this world, then your fire will light up the night sky just like a tiny firefly. It doesn’t matter how small you are, how young or old you are, or whatever fear you might have that is holding you back, just let go of it all and light up by being yourself. The beauty of the firefly is that is a simple insect with an extraordinary light inside. So too are we. Our greatest beauty is found in our simplest internal truths and if we hold on to those dearly, our light will not be able to be hidden.
