You always remember your first everything. First sport. First dream. First love. First kiss. First job. First client. We remember our first everything because it is in our firsts of anything that we most grow.
I spent last night with my first client Hanna. Six years ago, unbeknownst to her, she was my first guinea pig client, given to me by Gold’s Gym, who trusted her body and nutrition to me. Overwhelmed and intimidated by my role in the Fitness Industry, I made typical rookie mistakes: made her throw up on her first workout, improperly set her up on a stationary bike once that turned into a disastrous face-plant, and even directed her towards pre-packaged “nutritious” health foods instead of towards whole, natural ones. The point is, part of first anythings is failing and learning to laugh through your mistakes. And while I wasn’t the trainer then that I am now, I did have the only thing then that I needed: passion. Let your passion lead your firsts. The learning and the know-how will come after you take that first step, and you may be surprised to see that your firsts will leave an impact on your life and heart.
Just like the Will Smith quote above, the first step to any sort of accomplishment is in the power of the mind and the power of self belief. Wherever the mind goes, the body will follow. Embrace your firsts and let your mind be strong.
