The constitution only guarantees the American People the right to pursue happiness. YOU HAVE TO CATCH IT YOURSELF. – Benjamin Franklin
Positive psychology: If you can study and measure depression, you can study and measure happiness.
Happiness actually helps you achieve your other goals. People will be drawn to you, you will be more effective at your job and you will see life from the eyes that really matter.
The more happiness you have, the more everyone has.
50% of the differences in our happiness levels are determined by our genes…our genetic set point or genetic set range. 10% is circumstantial (income, living place, social status) and 40% is our perspective and INTENTIONAL activity and behavior.
Happiness flow; people who experience flow on a regular basis are more balanced and happier. The psychology of optimal experience…flow is the synergy of different aspects of consciousness that are completely fulfilling, something that we can do well and lose ourselves within like nothing else matters.
Meditation on compassion and loving-kindness has been shown by research to make people happier within just two weeks. Intentional meditation ignites the brain on fire and literally re-shapes the brain. Two weeks of training in simple compassion practice does change the brain in significant ways…evidence indicates that we change the gross structure of the cortical section of the brain in the happiness reception section. We can in essence, WITH INTENTION, change our brains.
People who make a list every Sunday of 5 things that they are thankful for are significantly happier than people that don’t make gratitude lists.
Intentional acts of kindness are one of the most significant contributions to reported happiness.
Collaboration versus competition: nerve firings in the brain of high levels of dopamine when in collaboration and community with others….we are made for connection and connection brings us fulfillment.
Happiness with your body
Happiness with your progress in fitness
Happiness with the simple and pure joy of moving your body
The main releaser of dopamine in your brain is from exercise. Chemically controlled…activity and moving and interacting are essential.
Use it or lose it….if you don’t use your receptors, your receptors will shrink. Extreme lack of use of receptors can lead to Parkinson’s disease.
You eat bad, you’ll dog yourself out. The keys to happiness are: intrinsic goals (personal goals, relationships and desire to help) People who pursue intrinsic goals are significantly happier and those who pursue extrinsic goals are constantly behind and stressed…never able to keep up.
Think about your food intrinsically…how does it make you feel? How does it energize you? Good nutrition is not only about the external result.
What you put into your body determines how you feel physically, emotionally and mentally, there is a domino effect.
Stop poking your big toe into the water and doing a freaking CANNONBALL. Life is so much more fun that way.
