I have always been passionate about wellness, having committed myself to a career in fitness and confidence coaching and teaching others along the way that every small investment in one’s health makes a compound effect of a positive difference. I thought I had everything about health figured out. Then, when I became a mom I learned an inconvenient truth: that our personal care, cosmetic and household cleaners are filled with dangerous, and unregulated toxins, among which include known carcinogens and endocrine disruptors. So, even though I was exercising consistently, eating organically and being intentional about my thoughts, I was unknowingly rubbing toxic chemicals into my body, which was contradictory to all of my other efforts towards wellness.
Everything changed for me when one day, daughter Ellie spent a day on the beach, nuzzled up to me, kissing my cheeks with infant kisses in the ocean breeze. Baby kisses are special, especially ones from my little Ellie belle, but then I realized that Ellie had been practically drinking the ingredients of the lotions – the face moisturizer, the sunscreen and the body creams – I put on my body and I had no clue that they could be harmful to her, or to me for that matter.
Here’s the good news about the outraging statistics of negligence in the regulation of chemicals in our products: there is something we can do about it. First, we can educate ourselves. I personally abide by Beautycounter’s Never List, a list of ingredients that are known carcinogens and endocrine disruptors. Secondly, we can choose to stop spending our consumer dollars on companies who make and sell unsafe products and we can start demanding that Congress, who has not passed a regulation law regarding the cosmetic industry since 1938, make some changes. The European Union has outlawed the use of over 1,400 chemicals in self-care products and the United States has only regulated 11 out of commercial use. We have a problem, and it directly affects our health and safety. It’s time we do something about it.
What I learned has compelled me not only to take action in #SwitchingToSafer for the products I chose for myself and my family, but further than that, I knew I needed to get involved and help educate others. Making changes to what we put on and around our bodies can really make a significant difference in our overall health and wellbeing. Small changes matter. You matter. Your family matters. Together we can be more confident about the products we put on and around our bodies and on and around the bodies of our loved ones.
Maya Angleou once said, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then, when you know better, do better.” I now know better for this area of wellness, so I will now do better and I invite you to do the same.
So yes, the food you eat is so important, but what you put on your skin, your babies’ skin or the products you use in your household are EQUALLY important! Y’ all—toxins are scary, and trust me I didn’t want to believe this for a long time—toxins impact us in more ways than we ever can imagine and can lead to many hormone issues, metabolism dysfunction, toxic liver syndrome, infertility, breakouts, migraines, sleep issues, cancer, allergies and so much more.
Decades of studies indicate that serious health issues (including, but not limited to asthma, learning disabilities, cancer and infertility) are on the rise, and due in some part to our ongoing exposure to toxic chemicals—whether it’s in the shower, on our commute, while we eat lunch at a local restaurant, or when we clean our kitchens at home.
What’s worse is the Food and Drug Administration (the agency that regulates cosmetics) allows companies to use chemicals known to be extremely harmful (lead, formaldehyde, and phthalates) in the products we put on our bodies and on our kids every single day, day after day.
It can feel overwhelming, not knowing where to start in your #SwitchToSafer journey, but I can assure you of this, the perfect place to start is somewhere. I invite you to start with your personal care and cosmetic products. Start with Beautycounter and allow me to welcome you into the safer and healthier beauty tribe we like to call #betterbeauty. Be encouraged by knowing that every small switch you make to a safer product does make a difference!
Beautycounter is dedicated to product performance, just as much as they are to product safety. After trying countless non-toxic cosmetic brands, I can tell you that this combination of safe ingredients and products that work is extremely rare.
Some natural cosmetic brands use only 100% organic ingredients. This is as pure as makeup can get, but often, the performance is lacking. While Beautycounter uses both synthetic and organic ingredients, they never compromise on the safety of the ingredients. Beautycounter has developed a groundbreaking and rigorous ingredient screening process, looking for data on skin irritation, carcinogenicity, reproductive toxicity, cumulative exposure (are we exposed to this chemical from other sources) and more.
Every single Beautycounter product is listed on EWG’s Skindeep database, which is my go-to resource for researching product safety! These products work extremely well and are comparable to the luxurious brands I was using from department stores and high end spas. Except, they are void of all the harsh chemicals. My skin has honestly never looked better!

- At Beautycounter, we are a multi-channel company committed to transparency, advocacy and activism; we’ve banned more than 1,500 ingredients setting a new health and safety standard—all while ensuring our products perform, and that they’re as indulgent (if not more, in my opinion) as any luxe shampoo, lipstick or oil in the market. Our mission is to get safer products in the hands of everyone and to get legislative change made so that all products meet health safety standards. We believe that everyone should be their own beautiful and we see beauty in everything.
- Decades of studies indicate that serious health issues (including, but not limited to asthma, learning disabilities, cancer and infertility) are on the rise, and due in some part to our ongoing exposure to toxic chemicals—whether it’s in the shower, on our commute, while we eat lunch at a local restaurant, or when we clean our kitchens at home. Beautycounter is committed to having the strictest standard of regulation and safety, only choosing products that precisely meet the highest standards of safety, because we believe that no one should ever have to compromise their health for beauty.
- The United States has not passed a major law to regulate the safety of ingredients used in personal care products since 1938 and furthermore, every year more and more chemicals are being released into commerce without any regulation or safety testing. At Beautycounter we believe in leading the change and in demanding regulation for the cosmetic and personal care industry because we do not want to see people continue to sacrifice their health and wellness because of the products they choose to use and assumed were safe.
