Coaching your confidence and courage to that you finish what you start and contribute to the world in a way that matters.
Podcast #716
The voice in your head is shaping more than your moodâit’s shaping your future.
In this episode, we’re talking about why being hard on yourself isn’t helping you become your best self, and what to do instead. You’ll learn how to recognize the difference between accountability and self-criticism, why your inner dialogue matters so much, and how to replace self-defeating thoughts with words that build confidence, resilience, and belief.
If you’re tired of feeling like your own worst enemy, this episode will help you become your own greatest encourager.
Because the way you speak to yourself today determines the person you’re becoming tomorrow.
Your inner dialogue isn’t just describing your life.
It’s creating it.
Most people didn’t wake up one day deciding to be cruel to themselves.
They learned it.
Maybe…
So your brain concludes:
“If I stay hard on myself…
I’ll keep improving.”
At first…
It works.
Until it doesn’t.
Key line:
The strategy that got you here may be the strategy that’s preventing you from going further.
The biggest lie:
“If I stop criticizing myself…
I’ll lose my edge.”
Ask listeners:
Have you ever been afraid that self-compassion means lowering your standards?
Because that’s exactly what I believed.
Then flip it.
Confidence doesn’t come from beating yourself up.
Confidence comes from learning you can trust yourself.
Accountability says:
“I missed today.
Let’s figure out why.”
Self-criticism says:
“You always do this.
You’ll never change.”
One creates curiosity.
The other creates shame.
One leads to action.
The other leads to hiding.
Ask:
Think about someone who constantly criticizes you.
Do you feel inspired around them?
Or anxious?
Defensive?
Like hiding?
Now imagine that person…
Lives in your head.
Twenty-four hours a day.
Voice #1
The Critic
Points out flaws.
Predicts failure.
Magnifies mistakes.
Voice #2
The Coach
Honest.
Calm.
Constructive.
Focused on solutions.
Says:
“Okay.
What can we learn?”
Voice #3
The Champion
Reminds you who you are.
Speaks identity.
Believes in your future.
Says:
“You’ve done hard things before.
You’ll do them again.”
Tell listeners:
You need all three in life.
But most of us have let the critic take over the microphone.
You can always change coaches.
-baker hockey coach
-my own atheltic coachesÂ
Every sentence you repeat to yourself becomes a vote for the person you’re becoming.
You are constantly rehearsing your future.
Not with your actions first.
With your words.
If every day you say:
“I’m so bad at this.”
“I’ll probably fail.”
“I’m just an anxious person.”
“I never follow through.”
Your brain starts looking for evidence to make those statements true.
But the opposite is also true.
When you intentionally say:
“I’m becoming someone who follows through.”
“I can learn this.”
“I’m building confidence one decision at a time.”
“I’ve done hard things before.”
Your brain begins looking for evidence of that.
Before you let a thought become your internal dialogue, ask:
B â Does this build belief?
E â Does this encourage growth?
L â Is this language I’d use with someone I love?
I â Is it identity-based?
E â Is it evidence-backed?
F â Does it move me forward?
Not every thought deserves a microphone.
Imagine two coaches.
Coach A says:
“You’re terrible.
You’ll never get this right.”
Coach B says:
“Good effort.
Let’s adjust your form and try again.”
Which athlete improves?
Now remember…
You are both the coach and the athlete.
Your future self is listening.
Every sentence is either saying:
“I don’t think you can.”
or
“I know you’re becoming.”
Speak to yourself like you’re talking to the future version of youânot the current version.
Your words become your world’s architecture.
You don’t think your way into a new life.
You speak your way into believing you’re capable of itâand then you act accordingly.
“The voice inside your head becomes the life outside your head.”
“Self-criticism creates pressure. Self-respect creates consistency.”
“You don’t become stronger by becoming meaner to yourself.”
“You can’t hate yourself into becoming someone you love.”
“Your inner dialogue is either building trust…or breaking it.”
“Confidence grows where self-respect lives.”
“Correction doesn’t require condemnation.”
“Your future is listening to how you speak to yourself today.”
Closing Challenge
For the next seven days…
Catch every time you criticize yourself.
Instead of asking,
“What’s wrong with me?”
Ask,
“What do I need?”
Instead of,
“I failed.”
Say,
“I’m learning.”
Instead of,
“I’ll never change.”
Say,
“I’m practicing becoming someone new.”
Because confidence isn’t built by having perfect thoughts.
It’s built by refusing to let your inner critic have the final word.
Friend, if today’s episode convicted you a little, that’s okay. It means you’ve become aware of something that can change.
Imagine what your life would look like if the loudest voice you heard every day wasn’t your criticâbut your coach.
The goal isn’t to stop growing.
The goal is to grow with grace.
Because the way you talk to yourself today is shaping the person you’ll become tomorrow.
I think this episode has the ingredients to become one of your evergreen favorites because it isn’t just about confidenceâit gives people a practical framework (“Critic, Coach, Champion”) that they can remember and use immediately.
