Podcast #655

THIS MAKES CONSISTENCY EASY

If you’ve ever felt like consistency is hard for you—like you’re on fire for a few days and then fizzle out—this episode is your roadmap. In today’s show, I’m breaking down the three mindset shifts that make consistency feel natural, not forced. Learn how knowing your “why,” identifying your future self, and eliminating the option to quit can radically simplify the process of showing up every day.

If you’ve ever wondered:

– Why can’t I just stick with things?
– Why do I start strong and then fade out?
– Why does everyone else seem to stay consistent—while I keep falling off?

This episode is for you.
I’m going to give you four mindset shifts that will make consistency feel easier—dare I say, almost automatic.
Plus, I’ll share examples from my own routine and client wins that prove: consistency isn’t a personality trait—it’s a decision.
<img decoding=” data-emoji=”👉” aria-label=”👉” /> Listen in and take the guesswork out of sticking with your goals.

3 Things that Make Consistency Easy:

  1. Knowing Your Why
  2. Knowing Who You Want to Be
  3. Knowing You Don’t Have a Choice / Not Giving Yourself a Choice

Bonus: Know Yourself (Your Weak Points)

Point 1: Know Your Why

– The deeper the why, the stronger the follow-through
– Example: showing up for a business goal vs. showing up for who you’re becoming
– Journal prompt: “Why does this matter to me more than my comfort?”

Point 2: Know Who You Want to Be

– Identity drives behavior: consistency follows who you believe you are
– Reframe: don’t say “I have to do this,” say “This is who I am now”
– Visualization prompt: Describe the version of you who is already consistent

Point 3: Stop Giving Yourself a Choice

– Why “should I or shouldn’t I?” is the enemy of consistency
– Treat it like brushing your teeth: it’s non-negotiable
– Client example: shifting from “I hope I show up” to “I always show up”
– Affirmation: “This is just what I do now.”
When you know yourself, you lead yourself better.

KNOW YOUR EXCUSES, AND THEN CREATE SYSTEMS TO PREVENT THEM.

And that makes consistency a whole lot easier.

I don't give myself a choice, and that makes it so much easier to do y'all. Consistency isn't a personality trait, it's a decision. Get ready for a great episode.

Listen in and let's take the guesswork outta sticking with your goals or whatever it is that you are committed to, to next level, your career, your life, your fitness, your health, your happiness.[00:02:00]

Guys, welcome to the Confidence Podcast. I'm your confidence coach, Trish Blackwell, and you're listening to episode. 655. This is what's gonna make consistency easy. And when you are consistent, you can do anything. Let's be real for a second. You don't need more motivation. You don't need another planner or productivity hack.

You don't need something that, you know, you find trending on TikTok or Instagram that's gonna get you that breakthrough. That next thing to, to get your. Your social media to take off, to get your nutrition dialed in, to get yourself to, I don't know what it is that you're ready to next level, where you're in your career, how you're managing your finances, but if you've ever wondered, why can't I stick with things?

Or why do I start so strong and then fade out? Why does, [00:03:00] why do those high achievers that I wanna be like, why are they sticking to it? What do they know that I don't know? This is for you. And the reality is that, um, I think too many of us just, we say, I hope I'm gonna do it. I'm committed to this. Um, I'm gonna work to follow through.

I'm gonna try to do these things. There is no try. Either you commit or you don't. You either want that thing or you don't see many of us want that next thing. Maybe it's the better abs. Maybe it's the promotion. Maybe it's the breakthrough in your business. Maybe it's dating, um, finding the right person, and, and we put a little bit of effort in.

We put a little bit of time in, but you aren't so consistent that it is part of who you are. And that's the thing. There are, we're making it too hard because we are giving ourself a choice to quit. One of my most, um, most listened to episodes is actually called micro quitting. Um, I'm gonna make sure I link that episode.

In the show [00:04:00] notes, but micro quitting is one of the e easiest ways to derail your dreams. It's distraction. Distraction takes your dreams and your goals and puts it on slow motion. And so the, the reason that you struggle with consistency isn't because you're not able to be consistent. It's not because of your, your discipline.

It's just because you've made your excuses. More important than your commitments, you're allowing your excuses, which they're always gonna be there. Micro quitting and micro excuses are always there. Micro complaining is always gonna happen in small ways, but your commitment to what you want must be greater than the excuse, the reason, the lack of motivation, the fatigue, the whatever you're facing.

Because every day you have a million reasons not to be consistent on that thing. On finishing the book. On doing your stretching on that, that discipline of maybe creative writing or shutting the boundaries of, and keeping your, structuring your life in a way that brings you [00:05:00] joy. So let's talk about these, these approaches, three approaches that are gonna help you master consistency.

I'm gonna give you the breakdown right now, and then I want you to, we're gonna go and dive in and pull these apart a little bit. The first thing is you have to know your why. The second thing is you have to know who you want to be, and the third thing is you have to know. That you don't have a choice.

Like I think sometimes we go, well, if I put a little bit of effort in and I'm kind of consistent and I'm kind of committed and I kind of track my data, then I'm maybe like, I should make some progress. You're either committed or you're not. We're either all in and we say, this is who I'm becoming. This is what I'm doing.

This is what I have committed to, or you're not. It's no different if you're in a serious monogamous relationship. You've mastered this, and if you walk in integrity and honor that monogamous relationship, that monogamous commitment, you don't [00:06:00] struggle with consistency because you made a commitment. Right?

I have committed to being married to my husband and to being, he is the only person that I. Have intimacy with that, I pursue emotionally and physically. It is not hard to be consistent in loving him because I've made a commitment to love him every day of my life, and so that's the difference. Take that concept and apply that to whatever area of your life.

When you think about where in your area of your life, you need to be more consistent. There's probably one thing, maybe it's. Nutrition. Maybe it's following through on that big, hairy, audacious goal. Your bhag of writing the book, publishing the book, uh, making a million dollars. I, I, well, I don't know what it is.

Running a marathon. But there's something that you're dropping, having a more important social life. You're, you're, you're crushing it professionally, but you're working 70 hours a week and you keep saying, I wish I had time for our friends. But, but you're not committed to consistently pursuing and prioritizing a [00:07:00] social life.

You have to go, what is it that I want? And is the reason I'm getting not getting it yet? Is it on me? More often than not, the reason we're not getting the result we want in our life is 'cause we haven't been willing to do the consistent effort and work towards it. It's not a one the time thing. It's a little by little committed, consistent efforts, and that's why we have to know, oh.

The, we have to know, first off, what area of real your life, you wanna be more committed? Where do you want more results? What do you want to change? Do you wanna lose the five pounds? Do you wanna write the book? Do you want to change careers? Do you want a more, um, just life giving, social life better marriage?

Are you consistently committed to moving the needle of that area of your life forward every day in that area of your life? You want to change or you want to improve or accelerate, or. Or deepen. That's where [00:08:00] we go, how can I be consistent? How can I track growth in this area? And then you've gotta know yourself too.

You've gotta know your weak points, which I want you to identify somewhere that you have tried to be consistent in the past, but you haven't actually 100% committed. I I am here as your coach to make sure. We don't half commit. There's nothing that's, I think, more heartbreaking than half committing, or often it's not a half commitment.

It's you're 70% in. And what's tragic about that is you're making lots of effort, but you're not making the final 30% and so you won't get the results, but you feel like you're working hard and you feel like you're making effort all for what you gotta be all. In, you've gotta be committed and it doesn't have to be hard.

So let's get back to, okay. The whole premise of today's podcast was how to make it not hard. So let's do that first and foremost, to make it not hard, you gotta know your why. The deeper the why, the greater your follow through. So, um, [00:09:00] showing up for what you really, really want. So you gotta know why does this matter to me more than my comfort?

Everything you want in life is on the other side of what you don't want to do. And so we have to go, why do I care? Why is this important and why does this matter to me? And how can I show up in a greater? And your consistency is going to be a, a, a associated with a vision that you have for yourself. I am massively consistent.

In my fitness, in my health, in my marriage, in my business, because I know very clearly what I want. I have a vision of how I wanna look in my, in my late forties and my fifties. I wanna be more fit in my forties and fifties than I was in my twenties and thirties. And I was a division one athlete and personal trainer.

Like I have the vision, I, I'm looking at that. And so I'm. Committed to being. It's easy for me to be committed 'cause I, I already know who I'm becoming. 'cause I have the, I use my imagination [00:10:00] to think about what I want. I'm committed in the little things in my, my business that I don't wanna do the, the stuff that I hate because I have a vision of what I want, the financial and location freedom that that gives me.

I, I am imagining taking photos of penguins in Antarctica with my daughter five years from now. But to get there, I need to do my spreadsheets and my analytics and my my ads and all of the stuff I don't want to do. But I'm consistent on that because I'm consistent on imagining what I want and what I'm working towards.

So your why, the deeper the why, the stronger the follow through. I don't want you to say, I just want a better social life and I wanna have more fun in my life. Like that's a great goal, but why? And sometimes when we answer why we have to acknow, 'cause I'm really burnt out and I want more purpose in my life.

I wanna feel more connection and meaning. Get to the deep why of what you want. So once you know your why, [00:11:00] then you have to know who you want to be. What kind of person do you wanna be in this world? I really wanna be a person who's reliable, who does what she says she's going to do. Now that's easy. I think it's easier to practice and implement to others.

But it's harder to reverse it and to do that to yourself. But I wanna be a person who does what she says she's going to do. And a person of integrity, meaning to be of integrity means you have to be consistent in how you behave. Therefore, if I'm gonna show up for my promises to other people, I also have to flip that.

And to be of integrity and to be congruent, I have to show up to my promises, to myself and that itself, the di, the vision of the person I want to be of a person of integrity and. Consistency and congruency gets me to do the little things. It gets me to do my three through three method. At night when I don't feel like it, it gets me to do my morning routine when I don't feel like it to open up, um, my Bible and spend time in, in, in, in my relationship with God when I'm like, oh, but [00:12:00] I have a million other things.

It gets me to be committed in the little things because I imagine I spend time thinking about who is my future self? Who do I want to be in this world if I, how do I maximize everything I've been given and to be the best version of myself? Because when I show up. As the best version of myself in this world, my kids get a better mother.

My friends get a better friend. My husband gets a better wife. My neighbors get a friendlier, more generous neighbor. The world is better because of the work I'm putting in myself. And then I also benefit in my joy and fulfillment, and so. Remember this consistency follows who you believe you are. I believe I'm that person.

Do I always show up as that version of me? No, absolutely not. Oh, like there are times that I'm glad that nobody, nobody is in my brain. There are, there's a lot of, I have a lot of growth ahead. I have a lot of room and opportunity for, for [00:13:00] improving in those areas. But I have a vision of who I'm becoming and who I want to be, and therefore I can consistently show up practicing being that version of myself.

And how do we practice being this elevated version of ourself through the little small habits that we do. And so, um. You can even practice using. If you've not yet taken my Reframe Mastery Challenge, please go to trish blackwell.com/reframe. I will teach you how to reframe the way you talk to yourself. A negative thought, uh, a complaining thought, uh, is incredible.

Uh, program. It, I really could not. If you want a next level the way you think you need, you need to take the the reframe challenge. But a reframe here for knowing who you wanna be is gonna be going how? How to get your brain to shift from, I have to do this, to this is who I am now. I'm a person who does this consistently.

I'm a person who prepares her her fruits and vegetables and salads ahead of time. I'm a person who gets eight hours of [00:14:00] sleep. Like, where do you want A next level stop saying I need to, or I'm working on and start saying. This is who I am now. I am a person who does this. I am proactively engaging and creating and cultivating and crafting my life.

And then, and then the more you practice, the more time you spend visualizing who you wanna be and be able to. Describe who you wanna be. The that more that version of you will be rooted and grounded and even more consistently available to you. And if you have not yet done work on deciding who is your 1.0 version of you and who's the 2.0 version of you, I'd highly recommend for you to get my group consistency growth tracker.

I'm gonna make sure it's linked in the, in the notes, but you can also find it at trish blackwell.com/system. In the consistency growth tracker, there's a whole spreadsheet on how to identify who is it that you used to be, who that's your 1.0 self, who is it that you're becoming, that's your 2.0 self, and then what [00:15:00] are the habits we need to drop and what are the habits that the, the elevated version of you has?

And then we start bridging the gap. And then I have a whole tracking system and a coaching video to show you how to do it. So you can prac track the progress because we're really, growth is so interesting 'cause it's intangible and invisible, yet absolutely apparent. As long as you're consistent in it, that's a great tool that will help you.

The third point here, I. And this is possibly the most critical element to making consistency easy. Whether it's discipline in your fitness, your nutrition, your spreadsheets, your financial management, your proactive pursuit of a, of a better social life. I don't know what it is, what you know your area.

Stop giving yourself a choice. You are. We are often struggling with consistency because we have not committed. Consistency is easy when it's a commitment. Not when it's a I I'm trying something. It's a big [00:16:00] difference. Because the why, why should I or shouldn't, should I or shouldn't I, should I follow through?

What? Allowing your feelings to come into the equation is always gonna derail your consistency. And when your consistency gets off, it's one of the easiest ways to tarnish our confidence. And when your confidence is down you, it's very easy to start buying into that self-pity narrative of like, oh, well, what's the point?

Is it gonna matter? Or even to, to, to believe the thought. What's the point? Does it matter? Everything you do does matter. Every action, every thought, every intention, every act of love, every act of kindness, every reframe that you have, that you change a negative thought into a positive thought, you take a thought captive, it all matters.

It all adds up, and it makes you more powerful and more present in your life and able to be consistent and keep showing up as your most fullest, fully alive version of you. The world needs a fully alive version of you. And so the enemy of [00:17:00] consistency is giving yourself a choice. You know, brushing your teeth.

For many people, for most people, it's non-negotiable like we are consistent. Staying faithful to your spouse if you're married is a non-negotiable. It is what you've committed to. It's a basic small thing. Brushing your teeth, basic small thing, chances are the thing that's standing between you and what you really want in life.

You and what you really want in your fitness is actually not that hard. It's probably one or two small micro habits, and I want you to think for a moment. For the thing you want most, what is the, what are the two or three habits that you need to change and be massively committed to that will move the needle.

And now let's start making them non-negotiable. Stop allowing yourself to say, I, I'm really gonna be consistent here and say, I'm committed. Your language matters. I'm committed to this small consistency. And once you realize that it's not hard, the hardest part is being able to say to yourself, I don't get a choice.

Take the choice out of it so that [00:18:00] it's not discipline, but rather commitment. And you can use this affirmation. This is just what I do now. Wow. This is just who I am. I am a person who's massively consistent. And I said this in the opening, but one of, one of my favorite, favorite adages that I tell my students and those I mentor in the College of confidence is that extraordinary things happen by doing ordinary things with extraordinary consistency.

The things that you're trying to be consistent on aren't hard. It's the commitment that people struggle with. But once you know this, know your why. Know why it matters to you. Know who you wanna be and know that you don't really have a choice. If you wanna get the result, you gotta be all in. Now. It will be easy 'cause it's a non negotiable.

You stop relying on how you feel and you start depending on who you wanna be and the type of commitment and follow through and integrity with which you wanna show up for yourself. I, I think the biggest takeaway that I want you to have is [00:19:00] that consistency doesn't require discipline, actually. I mean, it's just a commitment, but really, if you wanna be more consistent, we need to increase our self-awareness.

Ask yourself, where do I usually fall off track? What is it that triggers my inconsistency? Is it exhaustion? Is it lack of sleep? Is it comparison? Is it not doing my habits? Is it overcommitting? Is it fear of judgment? Is it over scrolling? What are the temptations that are pulling me from my follow through?

Or maybe it's that you've been too reliant on your feelings of wanting to feel motivated and you not learned how to talk back to yourself or your, or your thoughts. Ask yourself, where is it that I am falling? Because the truth is that knowing your weak points and knowing where you've struggled with inconsistency and being honest with yourself about it isn't about about shame.

It's actually strategy. Because once you know where your weak points are, you can [00:20:00] plan for them. So if your, if your weak points are in the evening and, and you, when you're feeling tired, do your most important habit before that starts or shift it to the morning if you can. If, if you procrastinate on something that feels overwhelming, uh, break it into a five minute task.

There's so many different methods because when you know yourself, you can lead yourself better, you can have more consistency because of your self-awareness. Once you know your excuses. Then you can create systems to prevent them. That's the game changer. Knowing your excuses, knowing your weak points, knowing where you fall.

Now we know here's how we have to, uh, systemize. And that once you have a system, first we start with commitment. Then we follow through with system. Once you have that, it makes consistency a whole lot easier. So I wanna encourage you to have, take radical responsibility, full ownership of your energy. Full ownership of your actions.

Full ownership of your excuses. Full ownership of your focus. Full ownership of your belief, [00:21:00] full ownership of your self talk, full ownership of your habits. Once you get to a place of radical responsibility rather than blaming, I don't have enough time. Not enough people are helping me. I'm always gonna struggle with this.

I'm just not a person who does this or this. This isn't natural for my personality. Once you take radical responsibility of all your excuses, now we have ownership. Ownership, interestingly enough, look, ownership and commitment. Once you take ownership of the results in your life, your commitments increase.

That for me, was really, really game changing. I wanna help you create a system that works. And I gotta tell you, uh, go get mine at trish blackwell.com/system. When you get that, that system, you're gonna get a, this is the Google spreadsheet that I use every single day to track my growth, to track my 1.0 to 2.0, to track my habits and my progress.

And it also has the 3, 3, 3 method in which really is one of my most critical habits every day to, to hold myself [00:22:00] accountable for what are my priorities, what are my focuses, what are my gratitudes, how am I showing up? In this world. I just wanna leave you today with this truth. Consistency is your superpower, but it starts with awareness.

Once you know what you want, once you know who you wanna be, and then you know how to commit to being that person, practic, we commit by being to our future self by practicing being them right now. Then the follow through, the consistency. It's not about willpower, it's not about discipline. It's just asking yourself every day, how do I show up?

And then also be proud of myself for how I'm showing up. I'm gonna show up and be proud, and this is where the self validation comes in. You have to cheer yourself on. I, I think too many of us dismiss the small things, and so we don't give ourself credit on the micro consistency, but I want you to give yourself the atta girls along the way for your consistent.

Maybe it's making the bed, maybe it's tracking your food. Maybe it's the prep of how you're doing something, but you've gotta slow down and say, [00:23:00] Hey, today I was winning. I'm proud of myself for a proud of myself for B, and proud of myself. Foresee, I'm proud of you For all of those, I wanna remind you, if you are not yet following the show, hit subscribe.
