My biggest fear used to be that I had wasted all of my potential. I thought it was a disappointment because of the dreams I had as a kid that I didn't achieve. I had coaches who told me that I had so much more in me. But I felt so stuck not knowing how to fully tap into it, I was self sabotaging by overthinking. And then I felt guilt and pressure to have not done better with my talent, with my life with the opportunity. If you've ever worried about not maximizing your fullest potential, this episode is for you. Maybe you've had people tell you that you have so much talent, or you're so intelligent, or you're so creative, or you're so athletic. But you aren't sure Well, if you believe them. Or if you do believe them, you don't know how to really even use what you've been given. It just feels overwhelming. And then you're afraid that you might waste it. But you don't know where to start. This episode is for you. Or maybe you're like me, and as a driven High Achiever you're so used to that self imposed internal pressure that you think that there's not another way to really reach your potential without feeling so stressed and pressured all the time. This episode is for you, in this episode of The confidence podcast, wasted potential and pressure. I'm going to coach on this whole concept of is there such a thing as wasted potential, and what to do about it, how to make up for lost time. And I'm gonna give you six power phrases to help you take the pressure off yourself. You're ready. Let's dive in. You're listening to the confidence podcast, the go to coaching podcast, oozing with motivation, and easy to implement steps that help you to be bold, and confident in life. I'm your host, Trish Blackwell, internationally recognized competence coach, best selling author, and founder of the College of competence. God created you to be you were made for more. And today's episode will help you tap into it. Let's go. Hey there. I'm at Trish Blackwell, your confidence coach and the host of the confidence podcast, you're listening to Episode 594. And we're talking today about wasted potential and pressure as you've already heard now, man, this is just a topic first. This was a listener requested topic who reached out to me on Instagram and just asked, Hey, is there any way you could coach on this? And absolutely, and I tell you that because one is a great topic too. I want you to know that I love I love hearing from you. I love getting your requests as far as what topics have I not very thoroughly covered that you'd like some more support on so thank you for that. And if you're not following me on Instagram, I am at Trish underscore Blackwell over there. I also still hang out on Facebook. It's Trish Blackwell coaching. And you can find me on YouTube. Just look for Trish Blackwell. We're gonna dive right into into our coaching here. Because I really want to dive to to this, this concept that you have something within you you've been given talent, I believe it's God given God and implanted God purposed. And what you've been given is your responsibility to steward. Now I want to expand this concept and realize I think sometimes we have these human timelines of when and how we should use our potential. And I just think there's more of a timeline to your story than maybe you're giving credit to. Now let me tell you my story with this relationship and this fear of wasted potential. I had coach after coach that told me you have so much talent, you've got this and I use that to drive me as if you don't know my story. As a young kid I stood out in my sport, which was swimming. At the age of nine. I was swimming faster than a lot of high schoolers. At the age of 10. I set a national age group record. I had some national press my coach got invited to speak on a national level to talk about literally his his his whole presentation at a national coaching conference was quote, the training of Trish Blackwell. So like everyone was so interested in how did they How did he train this young kid to go so fast? And so I had a lot of expectations and a lot of pressure. And I also had the drive I was obsessed with being the best. I was obsessed with making the Olympics, I was obsessed with maximizing every set every moment every time an opportunity I had in the pool. And so I was committed to maximize my potential. Now I didn't understand that my potential wasn't just physical, that in order to maximize my potential I needed to do the mental work behind it. And so what happened in the pull back story is I started overthinking I started feeling pressure I started worrying when someone else would catch up. And instead of staying in my own lane, literally in the sport of swimming, you swim in your own lane, I started looking around, I started getting distracted. And if you don't know a lot about swimming, it's all about being fast in the water being hydrogen dynamic and where you're at where your head position is, your body's going to follow. And even looking at trying to see where your competitor is in the lane next you it will throw your body position off, it will slow you down. So I looking around, I was slowed it down. And the more I saw that I was being slowed down, I would panic and try to make up for it. And then I became frantic in my effort. And all that to be said, as I found myself in a season, about soon. It was like a season of six years, where every coach I had said, you have this greatness and you just stop wasting it. And you're not wasting your work ethics there. We see you in practice, but the way you're swimming in a meet versus where you're swimming in practice is completely different. In practice, you're the best and practice I see what you're capable of in the meet what's happening. So hey, don't waste your potential. You You weren't there, and they were trying to tell me you got this. And instead I heard your disappointment, you're wasting your potential. This is a shame. Now add to that I was a division one in college division, one full scholarship athlete. And there was pressure there, I was expected to perform at a higher level. And so I was I was earmarked as being the person with lots of potential. And if you will, especially in the American educational system, I was paid for it. Right my my 60,000 $70,000 a year, education was paid for because of my potential. And so I had this undercurrent and fear that what if I waste it? What if I'm disappointed? What if the person who paid for my education feels like I was a disappointment? The scholarship that I had was also a leadership and academic. It was a they picked one athlete each year, one female each year of it in each class that received this scholarship. And so there was pressure there to have like, gosh, I've got this leadership potential. I've got this, they see this what if I let them down. And so my story with that is the reality and then I fast forward to into adulthood I had, I had coaches that said, Wow, you can go you could go pro, like we can take you into the sport of triathlon and Go Pro. If you've got so much potential and I even had a coach say if you don't go pro, you're wasting your potential. And I remember going I loved the sport of triathlon, I did Ironman. I love the Half Ironman distance I loved I loved it, but didn't love the sport enough to go. So be obsessed to be pro. And I knew that. But I had a person who I loved a mentor in my life, a coach who was trying to pull the most out of me say, if you don't go this path, you're wasting your potential. And so it's it's interesting how these, this this fear can come in. And that's my story. And I just want you to know that the story that you're telling yourself, these limiting beliefs are often created based on fixed potential. So I had this without realizing it, I thought I had a timeline from a potential and a fixed understanding, I thought there was only a certain amount that I could tap into. And that that's where the pressure came from. But I want to tell you this today, my potential is not fixed and neither is yours. When you realize that, yes, when you have I like the word capacity versus potential. I have a high capacity for athletic endeavors. High Capacity feels very open and expansive to me. Right, so whatever I can MIT to physically, if since we're speaking in this context, about physical potential that I had athletic potential, you can insert whichever type of potential you could be your literary storytelling potential, your academic potential, your creative and musical potential, whatever it might be, but I would, I would challenge you to substitute the word capacity. Because when you see that you have great capacity for something, then it becomes a pursuit an adventure and an exploration of how can I expand that? How can I go explore this world of limitless capacity, whereas to me potential feels like it's a very time bound, and quantity bound thing, and that's where it created a lot of pressure in my mind. My biggest fear was that I was wasting my potential I honestly this this even created friction in my relationship with God for I was embarrassed to tell you for almost a decade, because I felt like the only way God was going to use me in my life was through the clear athletic potential that I had been given. And when I didn't reach the peaks of success in the athletic world, to the point where I was famous, because I didn't reach that I felt like I had disappointed God.

Speaker 1 9:57

It took me a long time to be able to put that into words and to be able to say as a as a result of that, I distanced myself from him. And I Salford it's lonely, like it's a, it's a not ideal way for me for me to live. And so I just want to invite you in this episode today to renew your perspective, that we're not pursuing our potential or pursuing our capacity. And that when you that you it's an expansive growth oriented thing. And when you do this, you will open wide the gates. And there's a lot of false narratives that are keeping you stuck. And in the College of competence this month we are talking through you heard it last last week on the episode why your affirmations aren't working. I mentioned the NQ method that I am pursuing and teaching in the college confidence. And key was your narrative intelligence. It's the story, your ability to tell a story and have flexibility in the story that you're telling and to know, and ask yourself, does this story serve me? And does this or does this story not serve me now we're doing an entire month of coaching on the method of how to elevate your n q in the college competence. If you've never given the college confidence a try, come try us out. We have a 14 day money back guarantee, it's literally no rest, come join me for two weeks cancel, I don't care, I want you to get this content, I want you to get this information. You can go to college a confidence.com to get started. But the N q is it's so key. It's the story, you're telling yourself No, maybe the story you're telling yourself about your potential or your wasted potential or your missed opportunity or the pressure that you need to put on yourself to achieve. So that's the other part of this story is when you're afraid that you're not going to pursue your potential your action is generated from the emotion of pressure, and striving and desperation and lack and scarcity. It's a really hard and unhealthy and exhausting place to live, believe me, I lived there for decades. You don't have to, but you're we operate from that place because of our story. Because of the end cue that you haven't yet developed. Now, maybe some of the false narratives you're telling yourself are this, it's too late. I've missed my chance. I'm too old. I'm too young. I've sabotage my potential have wasted what I was given. Maybe the stories, I really don't have just kind of average, I don't have that much. I don't have that much to expand the story that you have and the story you're telling yourself about your I'm gonna use both words for the sake of today's conversation, your potential or your capacity is either empowering or disempowering. And you get to choose. So if the story you're telling yourself about your capacity is not building you up is not inspiring belief and action and obsession and inspiration, then then it's a disempowering story, and you need to change it. You have to choose which narrative you want. If you don't know how to change it again, come and join us in the college comments. Do it for 14 days, I will teach you how to change your story. So it's not too late. And the other thing that's really important, I think it's so interesting. Have you ever heard parents that say they're amazing parents, and then they start to beat themselves up? And they're like, I'm just really afraid I'm a bad mom, I'm really afraid I'm not gonna be a great dad, or there people who aren't yet parents. And they want to be parents, but they're afraid to get pregnant or pursue that because they're putting pressure on themselves, because they're like, ah, but what if I'm not a great mom? And my answer to this has always been if you care, and you're worried about being a great mom, that is evidence that you are, because it's not possible for you to not be great. If you're worried about it, and you value it, and you value it and you study, what does it mean to be a great parent, how do we become a better it's not just a flip of a switch that you just are or you aren't, it's a development, it's a skill set. It's an identity that we have to walk through and we grow through and the parent that I am now that my kids are six and nine is a very different parent than I was when they were three and one and I can be confident with certainty that I'm also going to become very different, more developed, more engaged, more aware, more growth obsessed mother, in the next three years, four years as well be a different parent different version of Trish the mom, when my kids are 16 and 13. It never stops, growth never stops. And so if you're aware, if you care about your capacity to care about your potential, if you care about using the gifts that God has given you to to do better and to do good in this world to do to make your life count. I just want you to know you're not behind the fact that you care, it means you're onto something. I want you today to reawaken your potential to reawaken your capacity and we're going to do that in a couple of ways. First, I want you to know why do I care about this? I care because I feel called My life's purpose is to real weaken the potential that you have let fall asleep inside of you. It's time to wake up, it's time to remember that nothing is wasted that is not too far gone, that you have not disappointed anybody that you are still, if you are breathing, if you are living and breathing, God has not done with you and you have something you can grow inside of you that will grow and bear fruit in this world and do good. We've got to stop comparing ourselves to other people, we've got to stop comparing our step two with somebody's step 22. We've got to get off of social media, we got to start taking action, stop caring what people think. But in order to reawaken your potential, the first thing you need to know and hear me really clearly it's there, your potential and your capacities there. But we cannot compare what you've been given us something different than I've been given what we've been given is something different than someone else. And for those of you who are parents, I hope that you see this in your kids. Like, it's so fascinating to me to watch both my kids have such different capacity for different things. And it's innate. Now, what you may not know about me is I am my capacity and skill as an artist, if I were to put myself in a scale of zero to 100 100, being like very, very talented. I'm about a 12. Okay, so, that being said, I just I admire people who can draw freehand and are very creative. And same thing with singing, I have so much admiration for people with a beautiful voice. And I watched my son at six can draw better than me at 40. And I'm looking at that just God given and I honestly, I know so little about art, I don't even know if he's got talent. But he did, he did get selected to the Fine Arts Festival of our county, right. So I mean, I see that there is somebody else that also sees he's got something, he's got some capacity, some, some some some things we can nurture and explore and give him more talent and gifts too. But it's amazing. Because you just go there are certain things that are in need new and you might be discounting them. Do not just despise small beginnings do not discount the natural tendencies and inclinations and talents. And giftings you have been given your job is to know and assess what are the gifts that you have? Is it storytelling? Is it listening? Is it art? Is it expression? Is it your passion and your enthusiasm? And then you go and you water that and you expand it. So first, you have to believe it's there. There's not a human on this in this on this planet who has not been given capacity. So you need to believe it's there, then you need to see it. That means you need to take the time to look inward, you need to see where it shows up where it used to show up in your life where it can show up more, you have to see that it doesn't need to make sense. It still will matter. And so you might be thinking like what if you're like me, and you find yourself in your 40s? And you're like, well, Trish, I also have this athletic talent, what am I going to do it now in my 40s Doesn't matter don't stop asking the what in the end instead start going being the person who expands the capacity they've been given. You have no idea what that will lead you. It's not our job to know it's our job to steward and multiply that which we've been given. So believe it's there, see it never gonna wake it up. And I mean, I mean, literally have fun waking it up, you are going to start from within you, you're gonna go it doesn't make sense. It's almost like having young children that you're waking up for school. And again, forgive me for these parenting analogies. But right now that's the thick of my life, right? So my six year old does not like to get out of bed in the mornings, especially when he knows he has to go to kindergarten. And so we wake him up, we make them up sometimes we tickle him, sometimes we sometimes we were who were firm, and authoritative and sometimes we sing songs. It just depends. But sometimes it's just fun to be like oh, how am I gonna wake up today? How am I gonna get you going? Let's do it. And you have to be persistent because then he hides under the covers. And he says no, I'm not gonna go today and then he changes beds and he hides Okay, wake it up that your potential and your capacity might be the same thing. Don't stop making it a problem if it's hard to wake it up. You it's your job to remind yourself of what you have within you. And then we activate it how do you activate it you take action start doing you start you start prioritizing time you stop making excuses.

Speaker 1 19:24

You stop complaining about your life and you stop making excuses. Excuses about the why you don't have time excuses about why it doesn't make sense excuses about how many years you missed on on expanding that gift that talent that capacity, the excuse about how nobody is going to read your book. There's already so many books out there whatever you're just become decide to become a person who's done with excuses. This is the most single most transformative decision you can make. As you expand your capacity just no more excuses. Not the I'm not in the right season of life. I don't have the right to Teachers, I don't have the money, none of that, and find a way to activate it, you can always activate your capacity. There's always a way when you're when you say, like, I've got this, I've got this, I'm going to make something of it. And why am I so passionate about this, I truly believe, and this is my faith. And for those of you who don't share my faith, that's absolutely fine. And I love that you're here too. But for the anybody who walks in faith, like me, I really believe that at the end of our life, we will be we will have to give an account of what we've done with what we've been given. And I can tell you this, I want to stand before my God and say, I have done these are the talents, the gifts, the cards, the opportunities you've been given me, given to me and I multiplied them I invested I multiplied, I, I've I've done the best. I've I've squeezed out every bit of everything you've given me of gratitude and praise. And that is my act of worship. And so you got to activate it, you got to take action on it, and then you have to water it, which watering it, what does that mean, invest in it, get a coach, get a mentor, become an expert, sharpen your skills, whatever it is like, but like water, which means give it the nutrients it needs. Not just taking action, like if you're if you're thinking in a physical sense, like you can go work out right but you also need to rest you need to water you need to eat nutrition have good and healthy nutrition, you've got to water your capacity as well, which means nurture it, feed it, give it the nutrition, the support the baseline the roots, that it needs to take root, to take growth to to sprout and grow, and then expand it. I just want you to this is more of a mental element of it. Expand that in your comprehension of what God can do with you. When you say I'm going to show up fully in life. I'm gonna stop worrying about if I'm wasting my potential, I'm just gonna start going out and living my potential to the fullest. I'm going to start living my capacity. I'm going to start being joyful. I'm going to start being a person who does not make excuses. I'm going to stop being just like everybody else, I'm gonna stop settling for average, and decide to be great, I'm going to greet my community. I'm going to be great my school system. I'm going to be great, a great friend, a great neighbor. I want to be different. The other thing I want to remind you of this why not you because you might be finding like that's great Trish so inspiring. You don't get my life and I don't I don't know your life. But I do know this. Why not you and why not now and I think it's time to remember who you are and what you have within you. And when you pair your dream your dreams with your potential and if you aren't sure what your dreams are, we have a full courses I actually off the top of my head I've three workshops and courses I can think of right now in our vault on the College of competence that will teach you exactly how to know what what your dream is. That's all in the college confidence so you can get instant access when you join. But you need a dream to encourage you your dreams will help you believe the when you pair your dream with your potential and your capacity, you'll start to shine you'll start taking massive action. Now if you're like me, when I figured some of this out, I started feeling like I was disappointed. I wasted a decade of my life floundering drifting settling. So I want to give you a couple of ways that you can make up for any perceived loss type now I'm notice I'm saying perceived last time not wasted potential. First, we have to start telling a better story about our potential and about with the time and if I look at that decade where I drifted, I needed that I needed to drink because now I know how unfulfilling drifting is. And I got fire in my belly. Now, I have such so much more passion for life and joy in life now that I will never go back and I needed to know how awful it feels to just get by to feel so unfulfilled. So rather than tell my story of wasted 10 years, I'm like those 10 years or years that gave me the counter the anti inspiration for the life I'm going to live. Tell yourself a better story. Another way to make up for lost time is become a massive action taker. This also decide to be somebody who doesn't get embarrassed when you go all out. And you go all in on life. They're going to be naysayers. They're going to be haters. They're going to be people who say wow, you seem a little intense. Yeah. Yes, I am. I'm intense about maximizing my life. I mean, I'm passionate about my family. I'm passionate about using what God's given me. Yeah. Because listen, you're gonna get haters, you're gonna get naysayers, but you will never have somebody who's taking the time to be a keyboard warrior or to have an offhanded negative comment to you who's doing anything with their life. That's more than you're doing it are people who are sitting on the sidelines of life, commenting on people taking action, their comments mean nothing. So decide to be somebody who doesn't get embarrassed. Go after things without worrying what people think. Take your habits. So next level, get coached, push yourself coaches help push you to a standard of greatness coaches help you remember what's inside. When I'm working with my one on one clients, I tell them also my my students in the college competence. I am a, I'm a passionate coach. And I will say I'm sorry, like you said, that was a big dream for you. But here's what I see as possible. I am here to reflect back to you what I see inside of you. And I want you to remember this, you are not behind your efforts matter. I think a power phrase I like to say is I'm expanding my capacity, I'm in the pursuit of expanding my capacity. I'm just getting started. And to take the pressure off, I like to say to myself, my job is to be faithful, my job is to show up and just seize the day. My job is to be faithful with what I've been given an odd trust that God will do the rest. Now, as promised, I've got some pressure free affirmations for you. Here they are, and they are written in the show notes. If you want to put them check out the show notes, I have this all all the notes and then these specific affirmations written down for you go to Trish blackwell.com Ford slash 594. That's for episode 594. There's no pressure here. All I need to do all I need to be as me. There's no pressure here all I need to be as me. I can handle anything that happens. I can handle anything that happens. Every effort I make is compounding and creating the results I want. You see we need to believe that our little adds up little by little big things get done. extraordinary results happen. As a result of ordinary things done with extraordinary consistency. Every effort I make is compounding and creating the results I want the next one, give this one away. Little by Little Big Things get done. This takes the pressure off. You don't have to perfect your potential. You need to fix it pursue the expansion of your capacity. Final two, I have greatness within me. I have greatness within me and I tap into it more and more every day. I have greatness within me. And I tap into it more and more every day. I am on my way. Today's progress matters. I am on my way. Today's progress matters. Y'all go back, write these down. Speak them over yourself. It's your job to encourage your brain. I'm here to assist.
