Podcast #458

Better Sleep, More Confidence

A better rested you is a better you. We all love sleep, but what if sleep is hard for you, or life circumstances are keeping you up at night, tossing and turning with anxiety and overthinking?  Your relationship with your thoughts at night is within your control, and this is good news for anyone who wants more hours or more restful sleep. A well slept you is more emotionally and mentally sharp, and will show up in your life with more confidence and courage.

In this episode of The Confidence Podcast, we’re talking about:

  • The relationship between sleep and confidence, and how to scale up both in your life
  • Why putting pressure on yourself to sleep better doesn’t work
  • How to stop tossing and turning at night – 5 practical habits everyone should be doing
  • What to say to yourself at night when you can’t sleep and you’re stressed about it

Such a game changer in my life!

PowerBar08

I’ve been listening to this podcast for a few months now and it’s made such an impact on my thought life and the way that I approach each day! I’m really working on my confidence and Trish is such a gifted communicator and incorporates God and her faith so well in each episode! I’m a young 22  year old and I’m growing so much by listening to your podcast every morning! Thank you for all you do!

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SLEEP AND CONFIDENCE

A well rested you is a fully alive you.

Starting the day on empty gives you a mental handicap.

The better you feel, the more courageous you will be.

Sleep helps us recover from mental and physical exertion.

Sleep helps our emotional load stay at more even keel.

Fatigue exaggerates emotional load.

WHY PUTTING PRESSURE ON YOURSELF TO SLEEP BETTER DOESN’T WORK

There are three things that can happen at night.

  1. Sleep
  2. Rest
  3. Restlessness

Ideally, we would all want to always choose “sleep,” but realistically, you sometimes can only choose your back up option. You get to pick two, and by picking two, you’re eliminating one. You get more of what you focus on. If you are tossing and turning, and afraid of not getting a good nights sleep, you’re focused on restlessness, and therefore you create a night of restlessness as a result.

5 HABITS TO PREVENT TOSSING & TURNING

  1. Optimize your sleep hygiene (WLWB list for night?)
  2. Have a simple and specific nighttime routine
  3. Trigger your nighttime routine to start
  4. Make your bedroom inviting and screen free
  5. Empty your mind (journaling, prayer)

My WLWB for nighttime rest:

Small and extremely moderate alcohol intake, stop social media scrolling at 9PM, ice cold water before bed, kitchen clean, drinks ready for next day, schedule reviewed for next day, nighttime skin care routine, beautiful pajamas, clothes laid out for next day, 1 minute of stretching, linen spray, iPad reading.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOURSELF AT NIGHT WHEN YOU CAN’T SLEEP

  1. Yay! This is an opportunity I didn’t expect to get to manage my thoughts.
  2. I don’t have to sleep to be rested.
  3. I choose sleep and rest, and I release restlessness.
  4. I’m alive, I’m grateful and I was awakened to pray for someone.
  5. Those thoughts that are racing in my mind? I give them permission to pause – they’ll be taken care of in full tomorrow and it will all be okay.
