Double Blessing, How to Get It. How to Give It.
His discovery started with a simple experiment. Whenever Batterson received a blessing, he would give a similar blessing away. If someone paid him a compliment or gave him a gift or went out of their way to help him, he would return the favor by doing something similar for someone else.
We flip the blessing by blessing others in the way God has blessed us. That’s how the blessing becomes a double blessing. It turns giving into a game—one we can’t win because God will always outgive us! It’s an ancient truth found within the Abrahamic covenant: “I will bless you . . . and you will be a blessing.”
In other words, we are blessed to bless. The first blessing is receiving, but it doesn’t end there. The second blessing is giving it away! That’s the double blessing. And that’s where double joy is found.
In a day and age where the idea of blessing has been reduced to a hashtag (#blessed), Batterson challenges readers to pursue true, God-glorifying blessing and experience an exponential impact by participating in the double blessing.
Don’t settle for half of what God offers. Discover how you can both get it and give it . . . in Double Blessing.
Your latest book is Double Blessing. What does the title refer to and what is the purpose of your book?
The subtitle is How to Get it, How to Give it. How are those two sides of the blessing coin related to one another?
God doesn’t bless us to raise our standard of living. God blesses us to raise our standard of giving. What does it mean that we are “blessed to bless?”
Your book made me think about giving differently – in the margins of the book I made a note to myself: “how can I outgive others.” When did you start thinking like this, and when you got the idea, where you scared to take action on it?
Can you talk about what it was like to set your financial goals? (page 167) Sometimes it can feel shameful to pray for financial blessing and abundance, how does one reconcile that without feeling greedy?
A God-sized vision will always be beyond your resources, but it’s not beyond God’s ability. (page 161) Is that how you measure whether or not your visions are from God?
You talk about how generosity is born of optimism. (page 186). “Generosity is born of optimism.” How do you advise people to start stepping into openhanded and openhearted living if they are naturally pessimistic, past-tense people?
You make a statement: “Before original sin, there was original blessing.” Can you unpack this for us?
The church you lead, National Community Church in DC, has been quite generous over the years, giving over $19.3 million to kingdom projects in the last 19 years. That is amazing, especially for a congregation that is made up of many single 20 somethings. How do you explain this?
What God wants to accomplish through your life is longer than your life span!
Show me the size of your dream, and I’ll show you the size of your God. Of course, no matter how big your dream is, God is bigger still! (191) Mark, what do you do when you know the dream is coming, but you are in a waiting period? You’re out in the ocean, waiting for the wave to ride, but the horizon is flat?

Trish’s podcast has literally changed my life! I’ve actually been wanting to give a review for months but can’t seem to find it on my podcast app. It may have something to do with not having an iPhone. Anyways honestly I listen daily. without my daily dose of Trish I’m lost. Her words are inspiring and she just makes sense of things. Helps you to create and reach realistic goals. I am forever grateful for her words of wisdom. I am becoming the woman God has meant for me to be. I didn’t stumble on her by accident I do believe this is in his will for me
