I love infomercials. The promise of a quick-fix, an easy-to-purchase, come to your doorstep solution for whatever is keeping your life from being what you want it to be. As I kid I begged my mom to buy multiple TV pitches, and she obliged, in an effort to teach me that too-good-to-be-true is often just that. She is a wise teacher, always allowing me to learn by doing, and I learned the lesson. I haven’t bought anything from an infomercial since.
Sometimes people treat quotes like a quick-fix. They are personal development infomercials. Shiny enough to catch your attention, and simple enough to convince you that, in one swoop statement, you’ll have all of your problems fixed. Please don’t take this post, and subsequent list of confidence boosting quotes, as a quick-fix.
A good quote won’t change your life on its own. But it can change your life when applied to your life. We aren’t lacking for inspiration, access to knowledge or advice in this day and age. We walk around with Google in our pockets and the how internet at our fingertips. We can fill moments that we wait in line at the grocery store, gas station or post office with scrolling, and we can fill our brains with a litany of positive quotes. The way to make a quote change your life is to slow down to get to know it.
We get to know quotes, not by just being familiar with them, but by taking ownership of them. Memorize them. Write them out. Journal about what applying them means to your life, not in general, but right now, for your life this week. And then, most importantly, take action to implement the quote whenever you get a chance. It is by taking action that we truly take ownership.
There are a few classic quotes that changed my life. Eleanor Roosevelt’s, Do one thing everyday that scares you, Winston Churchill’s Never, never, never, never give in, and Teddy Roosevelt’s man in the arena speech. More than those, verses from the Bible transformed my soul, and continue to be a necessary part of my daily morning routine. Words, which is what quotes are, just a few words strung together in a row, have changed my life. They have transformed my mind. They have healed me from an eating disorder and freed from me a life of anxiety and perfectionism. Words have more power than anything else in this world, but it is up to us to activate their power in our lives.
The deep changes that words made in my life didn’t come from just one read through of a quote or scripture. They came from deep meditation. Lots of repetition. Writing the words out onto paper in my own hand. Memorizing them in order to write them deeply into my heart. When I find new words, quotes and verses alike, that give me hope and direction, I do everything I can to bring those words into every aspect of my day. From writing them out in the morning, to speaking them out loud to myself throughout the day, to changing my passwords to include portions of them, I make the words become part of my life. And, in return, this active meditation approach gives me life. The words come to life, and so do I.
As a specialist in the research of confidence and on how to activate more confidence in ones brain and life, here is a selection of quotations on confidence from my own work. I hope these inspire you and challenge you. May you take these words, work them into your life and let them bring you life.
