WORD OF THE YEAR:

I confess, I picked two for myself this year:

  1. Beauty.
  2. Joy.

Why? I went for a walk with Ellie on my back on New Year’s Day in the mountains of Virginia. My hubby was out golfing and the snow we were expecting for a four-day weekend of snowboarding didn’t come, so I took the opportunity to soak of the beauty of just being in a different environment. While I was walking – and trying to keep Ellie from falling asleep – a word popped into my mind: joy.

I need more joy in my life.

I didn’t want this word, because, well, I already have the tattoo. You know what I mean? It’s a been there, done that kind of thing. It’s humbling to admit that sometimes you need to relearn a lesson, or that a lesson that you have started to learn still needs times to unroll and develop and mature.

I have struggled to find joy in some of the areas of my life. I hold it in, I box it up, I put on the martyrdom mentality, and as a result, I exhaust myself emotionally, going to bed with a collapse instead of with a refreshed and thankful spirit.

I must ask myself, what would happen if I did my gratitude journal at night instead of in the morning? What would happen when, at 3pm or 4pm or at parenting-never-ends-pm, I could get myself to choose joy, joy, joy. In the same way that I want to choose love every time I can, I also want to choose joy. In this realization today I realized just how much joy has been absent.

We sometimes don’t notice what is absent when often that is what we most need.

And then I got the thought of “joy” on my walk, followed up by an email from a listener in Tours, France, sharing that the reflected image of the word “joie,” French for “joy,” is 2016.

What’s the word of the year that’s obvious to you?

What’s the word of the year that you really need?

5 THINGS TO CONSIDER AS YOU CHOOSE YOUR WORD:

  1. What do you want more of in your life?
  2. Is the word sticky for you?
  3. Can you come up with at least 3 specific ways you want more of that word in your life?
  4. How will the word positively impact your life?
  5. Can you mentally tattoo the word to yourself?

IMPORTANT REMINDER:

You are valuable.

You are who you are for a reason.

You have something to offer the world that no one else can offer.

You have the ability to encourage and inspire people in a way that only you can do.

Do not discount yourself.

Resist the temptation to play small.

Refuse to believe the lie that the little things you do aren’t noticed.
