WHY DO WE PUT SO MUCH PRESSURE ON OURSELVES?

Whispers at night…they say a variety of things:

  • You’re not enough.
  • You didn’t do enough today.
  • You didn’t make enough of a difference today.
  • You could have done _____ better.
  • You need to do more _____ today or tonight or tomorrow.
  • You should have thought about doing ________.
  • You aren’t special or making any noticeable difference in the world.

HOW CAN WE START TO OVERCOME AND SILENCE THESE WHISPERS?

I combat them by knowing that they are:

  • lies that simply aren’t true
  • thoughts not of God
  • the type of thinking that someone who lives in a constant state of anxiety accepts
  • measures of worth based on performance and accomplishment

I deepen my strength by affirming that I am enough – and that I can take the pressure off myself with these three truths that:

WHAT ARE THE THREE STRATEGIES TO TAKE THE PRESSURE OFF?

{Strategy #1}  Believing that life is beautiful and purposeful because of who God is and who He has made us to be, not because of anything we do, earn, accomplish, or prove gives permission to live in peace (and therefore without so much pressure and anxiety).

{Strategy #2} Reminding ourselves that lazy thinkers – ones who accept that life has to be a constant state of struggle, are ones who accept thinking like this all the time. We do not have to be one of those people and our differentiation from that type of living begins when we make a decision to start thinking differently.   If we want to live differently – and experience life differently, to experience it beautifully, – then we need to think differently.

{Strategy #3} Knowing that our purpose each and every day is to love others gives us absolute joy; it is a joy that can overwrite the unsettled anxieties that nag and steal our peace because when we abide in love, love abides in us. If we have done that well, then our day has been well lived.

I think it’s important to know that feeling this way – that hearing these whispers is a common experience. It’s also important to be aware of your triggers and to create a successful night habit.

Valen Hill!

Your podcasts have been words of encouragement to me throughout my own journey of perfectionism. In today’s world we are faced with an obscene amount of expectations set by a plethora of sources. Sometimes I feel as though life is a game of How Low Can You Go. Your words give me that little boost that I need sometimes to gain strength when I most need it. Thank you! I hope you know how important you are. Even though I am just one in  thousands of lives you touch, I just wanted to thank you for all the hard work you do. Coming from a mom of two I know how hard it is to pursue your passion and still feel okay about fulfilling your mom duty. You are being the best kind of mom, and example by teaching your daughter that it is possible to live out your dreams and have purpose. You probably don’t need me to tell you that, but being a work from home mom myself I know the challenges that go along with that. You have inspired me to pursue my passion, and I pray that our kids will be able to do the same. Thanks again!! You are truly a gift.
